Donaire family row unresolved Beth Celis First Posted 02:24:54 06/02/2011 Filed Under: Boxing, Nonito Donaire Jr., Fernando Montiel, Rachel Donaire I'm not sure if his forthcoming WBC and WBO bantamweight title fight against Mexican Fernando "KO-Chulito" Montiel had anything to do with it, but Nonito Donaire Jr. not too long ago made an attempt to patch up the differences between the warring factions in his family—his father Nonito Sr. and his beauteous wife Rachel. In an attempt to promote peace and goodwill among the Donaires, Nonito Jr. or Jun for short, invited his parents to a family vacation in Japan. As almost every Pinoy boxing buff knows, Jun and his father had a falling out after Nonito Sr. was fired as Jun's coach and trainer. To this day, the older Donaire claims he does not know why he was sacked by his own son. The talk is that Nonito Sr. has always suspected that Rachel, whom he never approved of, was behind his ouster as coach. According to Nonito Sr. he was the last one to be dropped from Team Donaire. All the other members were earlier sacked one by one since Rachel entered the picture. * * * One can imagine how Nonito Sr. must have felt considering that Rachel's parents are now in while they—Jun's own flesh and blood—are now out of the Donaire party. I've never met Nonito Sr., but in one of Jun and Rachel's recent visits to Manila, Rachel's parents were in the Team Donaire entourage.
