How come the boxing community labels the current heavyweight division is in terrible shape?

I've heard from everywhere including editorials, articles, guys from the boxing club, and even here on y! answers that the heavyweight division is in shambles. but why is it that bad? the several boxing organizations mess up every division, so whats the reason to say the heavyweight division sucks and it isnt like it was back then?

    Is there ANY heavyweight fight that you would pay to see? In fact, name ONE heavyweight fight they could put on pay-per-view.

    I think the reason that the division is in such bad shape is all the big guys that could have been good heavyweights are playing other sports, mainly football and basketball.

    Ever since all those great fighters of the 80s & 90s retired it seems there isnt a whole lot of good fighters in that division. If you compare the division now with it back in the 80s & 90s it does look like its a dying division.

    To me it's just two big guys slugging at one another. There is no boxing in it........well for 90% of the fighters that is. I truly feel that the Klitcho's need to fight each other. Then and only then I feel that the division maybe saved just a little. I wouldn't mind seeing which brother will get the best of the other.

    Even the golden era of heavyweights (Ali, Foreman, Frazer, Liston) was criticised at times. Just because it's boring to watch and shares eras of success with other divisions, namely welterweight, doesnt make the heavyweight division weak.

    Its also to do with the style of fighter in the division these days. Ali was about 220pounds, Frazier only a bit more than that. The Klitschko's, Valuev and such are at least a couple of inches taller and 40pounds heavier, this makes the fights more lethargic and slow even though the fighters themselves are still good

    In most every other division, there is at least one matchup in the boxing fans would love to see. At welter and super middle, there are at least a dozen compelling matchups each. Is there such a fight at heavyweight? That alone tells us that the HW division is weak.

    Heavy weight division is in bad shape. There are too many "champions". The 2 guys who legitimately can be seen as champs wont fight each other (they are brothers). Those same too are boring and not interesting to the American public...or anyone else really. It is so bad that the most interesting thing to happen since Lennox Lewis' retirement is that David Haye moved up...and he has fought onnly one fight at heavy so far.

    There are to many belts for one . Two there are no real good quality Heavyweight boxers like the 70's and 80's these so called champions would get whopped by the the top ten boxers of the year 1985 and it also got too corrupt in that sport .

    Well those articles you're reading are probably American, and in this country the HW division is dead because there are probably under five real contenders and the average sports fan probably couldn't name one of them. Chris Arreola, Eddie Chambers and Samuel Peters are the only real heavyweight contenders that come to mind right now, other than the Haye - Klitschko fight coming up, there is no real talent other then the Klitschko brothers and those contenders right now unfortunately.

    The heavy weight division is LITERALLY in terrible shape. Who wants to watch two huge fat unfit men leaning on each other for three rounds until one gets a lucky slugger punch in.
    I was fortunate to have seen Muhammad Ali fight,live. Also to witness the era of Frazier, Foreman, Ali, Norton, Holmes and Bob Foster (Light Heavy weight) You just can not compare to these guys. Ali > the greatest sportsman ever, of any sport. So yes, of course the heavy weight division is a mess. But watch out for the Irish/British lad > TYSON (his first name) a really likeable lad who respects his opponents, is humble and will do very well. He is over 6ft 5in tall but not a fat Mummy mover.
